Research task: Book Terminology

Brief: Familiarise yourself with the terminology used in describing the anatomy of a book and write some brief notes in your learning log on how the various structural elements could be modified to reflect the book’s function.

The anatomy of a book:

  1. Head
  2. Spine
  3. Tail
  4. Pages/leaves: The printed pages are usually folded into signatures, before sewing or gluing together to form the book block.
  5. Book Block: The main block of pages created when book pages are sewn or glued together before binding.
  6. Board: Rigid material for the covers of hardback books. Board is usually covered with leather, paper or cloth.
  7. Cover: Hardback books usually have an outer casing made from board which wraps around the text block, protecting the pages.

I came across a really informative and helpful website ( https://www.ibookbinding.com/blog/book-anatomy-parts-book/ ) I made some notes on the topic to give myself a more detailed knowledge of book terms.

Reflection

It was interesting to learn about the terms of a book and what they mean, these notes may come in useful to refer back to.

Hello :) My names Rachael, I'm 25 years old and live in Ipswich. I have two young children which is why I chose to study with OCA to fit studying around family life. I left school in 2009 and decided to go to college to study hairdressing and passed both my NVQ 2 & NVQ 3 but soon after completing my last year I realised it wasn't something I wanted to do for the rest of my life. Since then I have had two children and I also got married earlier on this year, now that my youngest child is starting nursery next year I decided its now my chance to pursue my dream in becoming a graphic designer so here I am :) I'm looking forward to gaining lots of new skills and learning all about graphic design, I'm also looking forward to meeting fellow students studying this course :)
